Representations of Donbas / Зображення Донбасу

Representations of Donbas / Зображення Донбасу is a book project dedicated to documenting the art scene in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions over the past three decades, from Ukraine’s independence in 1991 to the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine. Supported by the ‘Documenting Ukraine‘ program and the IWM (Institute for Human Sciences) in 2024, this publication captures the evolution of the artistic environment, especially how it has been reshaped by the ongoing war since 2014.

The book explores the geography and history of specific artworks, focusing on artists who were born and/or raised in Donbas (Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts) and those who continue to live and work there despite the ongoing war. It also highlights the experiences of artists who have been displaced but remain deeply connected to the region through their practice.

Through 30 in-depth interviews (12 conducted so far) with artists and cultural professionals, Representations of Donbas offers an insider’s perspective on the challenges and resilience of the local art community. The book also features contributions from international artists who have engaged with the region, adding a global dimension to the narrative.

Scheduled for release in early 2025, this publication aims to provide a vital resource, index, bibliography, and visuals for understanding the intersection of art and conflict in one of Ukraine’s most historically and culturally significant regions.
